The F-35 Lightning II is an ambitious project that aims to meet the needs of the various U.S. service arms in one versatile aircraft design. It was first deployed with units in 2011, and currently has three variants. The F-35B is a short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft with extremely low observability thanks to internal weapons bays and Radar Absorbing Material (RAM) surface coating sections, and can achieve Mach 1.6. Countries set to adopt it include the United States, Great Britain, Italy and Japan.
